Hi. I'm Avery.
I got 'The Call' in 2019, when I was told my father was lying in a hospital bed unconscious. That's when life signed me up for a crash course in caregiving.
I felt overwhelmed by doctors, paperwork, and phone calls that led nowhere. Everyone told me they had "answers," but no one had solutions.
The hospital wanted to discharge my dad before we were ready, when we didn't even know what was wrong. And when I asked for help, the social worker shrugged off my fears, and the discharge planner simply didn't show up.
"There was no one to tell me what to do. So I had to figure it out."
"There was no one to tell me what to do. So I had to figure it out."
I had to learn things that I never expected: How to get a POA signed in a hospital room, file disability claims, and fight with banks over estate forms. Then there was finding a nursing home (and finding the money to pay for it).
Then I did it again. Years of at-home, hands-on dementia care for my mother-in-law: medications, mobility, and mood swings. Through hospice, and beyond.
And again. Untangling another loved one's finances after a health crisis. There were late payments, IRS notices, fractured credit, and a mortgage at risk. I built a system from chaos and stabilized my family.
"I became the person I wish had been there for me."
"I became the person I wish had been there for me."
Caring for my family was expensive, in time, money, and life. But I knew it was the right thing to do.
I soon learned, however, that the cost was higher than I'd expected.
As demands increased, I increasingly felt like something was wrong. I first thought it was just the normal stuff—anxiety, depression, fatigue.
That's when I ended up in a wheelchair.
My role had suddenly reversed: the doctor's appointments were about me, and I had to rely on other people.
My role had suddenly reversed: the doctor's appointments were about me, and I had to rely on other people.
That's why my perspective is different, because I've lived both sides. I know what it's like to struggle arranging care, and to struggle with needing it.

So when I was finally able, I decided to do something meaningful with it all.

How do sessions work?
It's important that we start with a free intro phone call to see if we're a good fit to work together.
If we both decide to move forward, we'll meet by Zoom (unless you prefer phone).
I'll send you any notes and important information after each session so that you can easily reference what we talked about.
If you have questions between sessions, or if you need to get in touch for an urgent matter, I do my best to respond to emails by the next day.
I might send you a short form (5-10 minutes) to complete before our first paid session. This would be foundational information so that we can get the most out of that initial session, and maximize time for Q&A.
I may also ask you to send me any important documents that we identified together.

What's the difference between an Elder Care Strategist and a Geriatric Care Manager?
Geriatric Care Managers (GCMs) are amazing at managing day-to-day care needs for an aging parent.
They often have previous experience in nursing, social work, or caregiving. They specialize in coordinating everyday care and health services, and might attend doctor's appointments or personally check in at home.
GCMs are a crucial part of any care team, and I often help clients find and work with them.
But they don't typically help with the entire picture. That’s where I come in.
When you're unsure how to pay for care, navigate insurance, or deal with mountains of paperwork—these are just a few examples of where I can help.
The elder care industry is fragmented and confusing. I help you put all the moving pieces together, so you and your parent can focus on living life.
If you're not sure whether you'd benefit from a Geriatric Care Manager, let’s talk about it on your free initial call.

What's your methodology?
Over the years, I've found that most families face the same core challenges, just in different combinations and intensities.
I've mapped these into a framework of six areas that I use to make sure we're not missing anything important:
Affordability & Funding: How do we pay for this? I help you find funding sources you might not know about: life insurance settlements and conversions; Medicaid/Medi-Cal eligibility; VA benefits; reverse mortgages; local organizations; and more. We'll build a realistic budget, make preparations, and get you the right specialists when necessary.
Urgent Decisions: What do we do right now? When you're facing a hospital discharge deadline or a sudden crisis, I help you prioritize, align your family quickly, and help make safe decisions under pressure.
Paperwork & Systems: What documents do we need, and how do we stay organized? I walk you through key documents, forms, and records so you're prepared for every meeting with doctors, lawyers, and agencies.
Ongoing Care & Dignity: What happens as things change? I help you plan for cognitive decline, coordinate care from a distance, and make sure your parent's wishes are honored.
Safeguarding: How do we protect them? I help you prevent financial exploitation, ensure care quality, and put protections in place before something goes wrong.
Family Cohesion: How do we get everyone on the same page? I help families establish clear roles, navigate disagreements, and communicate without falling apart.
Not every family needs deep work in all six areas. Part of my job is figuring out where to focus.

Do you provide medical, legal, tax, or investment advice?
I fill in the crucial gaps between these and other professionals and their areas of expertise.
No, I do not provide medical, legal, tax, or investment advice. I am not a medical professional, lawyer, tax professional, or investment advisor.
For example, doctors may recommend that Mom or Dad needs care, but they may not be familiar with the documentation or assessments needed to make that care possible. Let alone with what you might need for a successful Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) claim.
Attorneys possess the legal expertise and training necessary to protect parents’ legal interests. But we've all heard stories of legal malpractice, or of friends and family being overcharged for unnecessary services. It's important to choose the right attorney, with the right experience, and to know how to maximize the value of interactions with them.
The same goes for accountants, financial advisors, and other professionals. I help you find the right ones, avoid the wrong ones, ask the right questions, and avoid the common (but avoidable) pitfalls.

Why did you become an Elder Care Strategist?
3 life-altering events:
My dad became ill, my partner's mom developed dementia, and my mom and step-dad faced a financial crisis.
Remember those statistics above, about the potential costs of caregiving? To me, those aren’t just numbers: they represent what I experienced first-hand.
My specific caregiving experiences saw me having to delay my studies and pause my career. I was unable to work for years.
A lot of that could have been avoided if someone had told me how to navigate the fragmented elder care system. I could have saved hundreds of hours of research as well as a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth between banks, doctors, lawyers, etc.
So when I was able to return to work, I decided to help others avoid that.
Every time a client or family tells me how they saved time or money, or that they're able to see their parents and kids happy again—that's what I live (and work) for.

Who do you work for?
I work for you, your parent, your family—and no one else.
If I refer you to another professional or service, know that I never accept referral fees. My referrals are made because of experience and reputation, not because I get any kickbacks.
I bill hourly; never by percentage or commission.
I'm proud of that, because it means I'm focused on who matters the most: you and your parent.

You mentioned that you're a Professional Fiduciary. Do you take cases directly managing someone's finances or healthcare?
My passion lies in helping families protect against the hidden costs and challenges that come with arranging care or managing affairs for a parent.
I do have active cases as a fiduciary, but I only take on direct management work under very specific circumstances. My hourly rate applies for all matters outside of probate cases.
If you're interested in working with a Professional Fiduciary, please get in touch. I can answer questions you might have about how fiduciaries work, what they charge, and how to find them. I can also refer you to one or more fiduciaries in your area.
